One of Our Volunteers - Sharon
Hi there
My name is Sharon and I am 55 years old and have been a volunteer with the Riding for the Disabled now for 7 years. In this time I have seen volunteers and riders come and go but for some strange reason I keep turning up every week, I used to attend 2 or 3 times a week but now I have reduced my time to 1 day a week due to reasons beyond my control.
I lost my confidence with horses when I was younger and then when I was in my late 40’s I decided to do a NVQ level 1 in horse care and passed both parts of this. I then wondered what I could do with my new found knowledge and a friend suggested that I do some voluntary work with the Riding for the disabled.
I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it, but with a few ups and downs along the way and have loved meeting and helping all of our disabled riders who are great characters and really enjoy riding and interacting with the horses. The instructors and the volunteers are all great and even though we are there to do a job we can also have a laugh and I think it is a very worthwhile and rewarding thing to do.
I think I will still be going when I get my first Zimmer frame as long as they will still want me. I also have the RDA Rossington hall group to thank for lots of lovely memories not forgetting the great nights out and for finding me my horse JoJo who I am pictured with.
